REGISTRATION

Student Registration

Section 27 of the Act states that a person is not entitled to:
  1. undertake a course of study that provides qualifications for registration as an occupational therapist; or
  2. provide occupational therapy as part of a course of study related to occupational therapy being undertaken in a place outside the State,
unless the person is registered as an occupational therapy student.

A person is eligible for registration as an occupational therapy student if that person satisfies the Board that he or she:
  1. genuinely requires registration on that register to either undertake a course of study that provides qualifications for registration, or to provide occupational therapy as part of a course of study being undertaken in a place outside the State; and
  2. is medically fit to provide occupational therapy; and
  3. is a fit and proper person to be registered.

An application for registration must be made in the proper manner and form and must be accompanied by all relevant documentation and forwarded to:

It should be noted that there is no fee payable when applying for registration as an occupational therapy student.

  • A Justice of the Peace is available at the offices of the Board by appointment

    • Pursuant to Section 28(4) of the Act the Registrar may grant "provisional" registration if it appears likely that the Board will grant registration at its next meeting. Provisional registration allows the applicant to enrol in their occupational therapy course prior to full registration being granted.

    • Applications are considered by the Registration Committee at its next scheduled meeting (second Wednesday of each month, except January). The Registration Committee makes a recommendation to the Board which is considered at the next scheduled Board meeting (third Wednesday of each month, except January) and applicants are advised of the Board's decision in writing after the Board meeting.

    • The Board has resolved to initially register students until 31 December in the year next following the year in which registration is effected.

    • All new registrants are issued with a student annual practising certificate, the Act & General Regulations,the Board's latest annual newletter and the Code of Professional Conduct and Practice.

    • The Board's Annual Reports and other publications are available to download from this website under "Publications".

    • Registered students are urged to fully acquaint themselves with the Act & Regulations and the Board's Code of Professional Conduct & Practice.

    Removal from the Student Register

    In accordance with Section 60 of the Act there is an obligation to report to the Board the cessation of status as a student, as follows:
    1. The person in charge of an educational institution must provide written notice to the Board if an occupational therapy student completes, or ceases to be enrolled in, a course of study at that institution providing qualifications for registration. Maximum Penalty: $5,000.

    2. A person registered as an occupational therapy student must provide written notice to the Board if he or she completes, or ceased to be enrolled in, the course of study that formed the basis for that registration. Maximum Penalty: $1,250.
    Once the Board has received written notice of cessation of status as a student, the person will be removed from the Register of Occupational Therapy Students and advised accordingly.
